If you have ever crossed the border from Ghana into Togo, stepping through the bustling Aflao checkpoint, you are instantly greeted by the vibrant pulse of Lomé. West Africa’s coastal gem is famous for its markets, its ocean breeze, and its deep-rooted history. But beneath the colonial facades and modern city streets lies a much older story forged by local traders, healing plants, and the resilient spirit of the people who shaped Togo.
Let us take a journey back to how a humble patch of coastal bush transformed into the capital of Togo.
From Alotimé to Lomé
Long before European maps bore the name Lomé, the land spoke the language of the local inhabitants. The city’s modern name is a Europeanized version of Alotimé.
In the local language, Alotimé translates to “in the middle of the Alo plants.” To this day, the Alo plant holds a revered status across the region for its traditional healing properties. Imagine standing centuries ago in a quiet coastal clearing, surrounded by these medicinal plants. Little did those early inhabitants know they were standing in the cradle of a future capital city.
The Birth of a Trading Hub
Lomé did not appear overnight; it was built on commerce and community. Back in the 1880s, local traders from Aŋlɔ sought out a fresh, strategic location on the West African coast to expand their trade networks.
They settled in an area then known as Bé-ƒuta. By 1882, it had already caught the attention of the British, rapidly developing into a bustling commercial hotspot.
However, the colonial chessboard shifted quickly in this era. In 1897, German colonial administrators decided to move the capital of their Togoland protectorate away from Aneho and plant their flag firmly in Bé-ƒuta. Under German rule, the city expanded at a breathtaking pace, drawing merchants, mariners, and migrants from all over the region.
That explosive growth hit a major turning point in 1914 at the outbreak of World War I, when French forces took control of the city, permanently altering its administrative trajectory.
